  • Family Weekend!

Mom and Dad came to visit this weekend - and I have pictures!  None of us can figure out how my parents have never managed to meet Keith and Don -- after years of all of us being friends -- afterall, Keith and Don have even met Tom and Erika! So we met up with the usual posse at Powerhouse Friday night.

As we were taking pictures - my parents kept asking if they would make it to the blog - of course!

Saturday morning we met up with Richard and Keith for some Waffle House. You may remember my mentioning our waitress, Kate, in early blogs. Well, she waited on us Saturday - while being 9 months and 2 days pregnant! She's probably had a baby girl by now!

Then we took Mom, Dad, and Chip to meet Ace!

That last one makes me laugh. Chip is scared to death of the camera and Ace has no appreciation for sitting still -this is the best picture I could get!

I took my parents to my office, showed them around, and tried to explain what it is that I "do"...

Then! We went to the game - Go Hogs!

Mom chickened out of getting her picture made with Bubba Hog - that would definitely have made the blog!

We had such a good time - wish they could have stayed longer. This is the weekend that won't end for me... I'm off again today!

Check out these and more pics in the "family" and "friends" photo albums.

  • Friday!

I am such a bum. I am what you'd call "under the weather" and I've been trying to be tough (a losing battle) and keep up my productivity at the office. It hasn't worked. I have peaced-out around 2:00 the last two days at work and I'm home today -- not going back until Tuesday... do the math.  I am home today cleaning and getting ready for my parents to come this weekend!

I had my first test in FR&A yesterday- and I'm feeling pretty exhausted and uninspired today... how about I give you the trivia answers - and then I'm going back to bed for a bit. I'm sure there's some THS or Judge Judy or Food Network calling my name...

    Trivia Answers!

    1. The day after October 4, 1582 was October 15, 1582. The earth travels around the sun every 365.242199 days, or what we call a "solar year." The ancient Romans devised the Julian calendar that lasted 365.25 days, but the solar year is eleven minutes and fourteen seconds shorter.

By 1582, the Julian calendar was ten days behind the solar calendar. Most western nations began using the Gregorian calendar, named for Pope Gregory XIII. The Gregorian Calendar synchronized the calendar year with the solar year by skipping the next ten days. The day after Thursday, October 4, 1582 was Friday, October 15, 1582. England and its American colonies did not follow the teachings of the pope, so it did not adjust to the Gregorian calendar until 1752. By this time, the Gregorian calendar was twelve days ahead of the Julian calendar.

Most of our calendar years last 365 days, but every four years we add one day to February. February usually has only 28 days, but the month lasts a day longer in what we call "leap years." Years divisible by four are usually leap years. The last four leap years were 2004, 2000, 1996, and 1992. Our next leap year will be 2008. We have to make another adjustment to the calendar because leap years would make the calendar year last 365.25 days, and the solar year is .007801 shorter, so we have to make further changes. Centennial years are years that end in 00. Centennial years are not leap years unless they are divisible by 400. This means that 1700, 1800, and 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 was. The next time someone says that there are 365 days in a year; you'll have a lot of corrections to offer!

    2. Robert E. Lee is the only person to date to have graduated from West Point Military Academy without a single demerit. (Though Laura gets style points for her answer.)

    3. The ghosts in Pac-Man are named Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde.

    4. The letter "J" does not yet appear anywhere within the periodic table of the elements.

    5. Starting with the number one, you would have to count to one thousand to use the letter "A". Leah is right about "101" -- the correct way to read this number is "one hundred one". Similarly, dates like "2007" are correctly read "two thousand seven". The "and" is unnecessary.

    6. Stewardesses is the longest word typed with only the left hand.

According to my footprints log - I have a few new readers. Welcome! Feel free to leave a note, check out the archives, browse the photos, etc.

Also - I'd like to provide a few links to some of my fellow bloggers: Nancy (who is too fancy for xanga...), Spring (a new blog connection), Laura, and Becky. Show them some love.  Also check out any and all of my subsciptions on the left-hand side of this page. The newly updated move to the top of the list.

    Happy Weekend!

  • Pleats. It's what's for dinner.

I didn't really think I had a position on the issue of pleats vs. flat-front pants - until today. There are those who feel strongly about this issue - you know who you are. I, however, have mixed feelings about this. I'm referring to guys' pants as I'm fairly certain that females have abandoned pleats altogether - please warn me if you are aware of an up-and-coming cutting-edge fashion that features pleated pants for women. God help us.

Nonetheless, I consider pleats a personal fashion preference and a style that should not be subject to any fashion "rules".  Wear pleats till the cows come home - but today I discovered an exception and I'm afraid I am forced to put my foot down at......pleated denim.

There is a man in my class who wore pleated jeans today and it made me giggle. I usually don't care what people wear as I don't pretend to have much fasion sense (If it were socially acceptable to wear head-to-toe black every day -- I would do it...) but the pleated jeans are too much. To add insult to injury - they are acid-wash. It's too much. I wanted so badly to take a picture of this - and just couldn't bring myself to be that blatant.  This will have to do...

I appreciate the response to the trivia questions - it really showcases the level of stimulation my readers are willing to sustain... Mindless trivia gets hundreds of hits and 6 comments in one day while musings of current events get heckling and demands for more trivia... I love it.

  • Have you ever had to sneeze while you were brushing your teeth? It's not pretty.

Due not only to heckling I received after my last post, but to the fact that it's Valentine's Day -- I have trivia for you! But no Multiple Choice this time - you slackers - you have to use your brains!

    1. Please provide the next item in the sequence: 1 October 1582, 2 October 1582, 3 October 1582, 4 October 1582, .....

    2. Name the only person to date to have graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point without a single demerit.

    3. Name all 4 ghosts that appear in the Pac Man arcade game.

    4. What letter of the alphabet does not appear in the Periodic Table of Elements?

    5. Begin counting from "1/one". When does the letter "A" make its first appearance?

    6. What is the longest word you can type using only your left hand?

And just to get your trivia-juices flowing -- here is some useless trivia for you to file away. Enjoy.

If you keep a Goldfish in the dark room, it will eventually turn white.
Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny, was allergic to carrots.
    All polar bears are left-handed.
Raindrops are not tear-drop shaped. They are rounded at the top and flat on the bottom.
Michael Jordan shaves his head on Tuesdays and Fridays.

  • What's all the fuss about?

I am somewhat disappointed in myself for my lack of interest in the upcoming elections – and, for that matter, politics in general. Hearing of each new contender throwing his or her hat into the ring – I find myself cynical and indifferent. Feeling this way seems insensitive.

Some background: I was once a devoted and active member of the Young Democrats and am currently a card-carrying member of the Democratic Party. I once dated a boy who was as fiscally and socially conservative as I am liberal and we had endless heated and passionate discussions on inexhaustible topics – important and otherwise. There was once a time in which, when prompted, I would have listed “politics” among my primary interests. This is no longer the case.

What has happened to me?  Surely I’m not old enough to be suspicious and pessimistic. Surely I’m not too old to still believe in the inherent good nature of people and society. I have always kinda prided myself on my “the children are our future”-esque attitude. I don’t shred receipts before I throw them away and I leave my car running when I run into the post office and I don’t yell at telemarketers. I’m not completely frozen over, right?

I’ve decided my disillusionment with domestic politics is a matter of staleness. The first few elections for which I was alive and old enough to remember – it was new and different and, to me, fascinating. But now, it seems that each one is eerily reminiscent of the previous and one party talks about “fixing” the other party’s “mistakes” and it just goes back and forth. This seems so silly to me.

To be clear, I am opinionated and passionate as ever and try my best to stay informed of goings-on in the world.  This entry is neither support of current policy nor an endorsement of change. I am as fascinated with social issues and human nature as a person can be, and I will likely be “arguing my point” until I die. I suppose I just prefer to occupy my thoughts with “What Really Matters” and not get wrapped up in “The Process”.

And I’d also like to note – without endorsing any candidate or party or issue – that I am proud of our country and our society for achieving a level of progressiveness and tolerance in which it is possible to support candidates with such gender, racial, and religious diversity. Let’s call it the silver lining.

  • I know this week has been a bit of a blogging dry spell...

... but I have a few fun things for you today.

First, it was a sad drive through Johnson on my way to work this morning.

It never ceases to disappoint me.

Fun link! This mindless fun monopolized several minutes of my day yesterday until I had to force myself to stop -- realizing it had the capability to eat up every bit of my productive time and energy. Enjoy.

Fun link #2! I watched Ace of Cakes with Nancy last night and I don't know that I've ever been more impressed and entertained at the same time. The show follows Duff Goldman and his employees at Charm City Cakes in Baltimore. They make cakes in any shape - for any occasion. It is truly amazing. Check out the gallery on their site.

Programming note: I never posted answers to the Super Bowl/Groundhog Day trivia. My apologies. Answers are as follows:

Advertisers paid $42K for spots during the first Super Bowl in 1967.

Advertisers paid $2.6 million in 2007. Even the Snickers Ad...

MVP of Super Bowl XLI was Peyton Manning (duh).

The 8 winning, Hall of Fame quarterbacks of the last 8 Super Bowls played in Miami are: Bart Starr (Super Bowl II - Green Bay Packers), Joe Namath (Super Bowl III - New York Jets), Johnny Unitas (Super Bowl V - Baltimore Colts), Terry Bradshaw (Super Bowl X and XIII - Pittsburgh Steelers), Joe Montana (Super Bowl XXIII - San Francisco 49ers), Steve Young (Super Bowl XXIX - San Francisco 49ers), and John Elway (Super Bowl XXXIII - Denver Broncos).

Punxsutawney Phil, of course, is the groundhog residing in Punxsutawney, PA and Groundhog Day has been a part of US History since 1887.

  • Super Bowl and Groundhog Day Trivia

After all the grief I received for skipping Fun Friday, I have decided to give you a few nuggets to help you pull through to the end of this week. (They're even multiple choice!)

    1. How much did advertisers pay for commercials during the first Super Bowl in 1967?

    (A) $22,000 (B) $42,000 (C) $34,000 (D) $19,000

    2. How much did advertisers pay for commercials in Super Bowl XLI?

    (A) $1 million (B) $6.2 million (C) $2.6 million (D) $10 million

    3. Who was named MVP of Super Bowl XLI?

You don't get choices for this one. It's a freebie.

    4. The winning quarterback of each of the 8 previous Super Bowls played in Miami is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Name 4 of them.

    5. Name the famous groundhog in Pennsylvania. And the year Groundhog Day was first celebrated in the US.

Saw Because I Said So this weekend. If you've seen one Mandy Moore movie, you've seen them all. But it was cute. I cannot WAIT to see Hannibal Rising this weekend -- anyone want to go with?
